Sunny Optics and Varioptic announced to launch a 2 Megapixel liquid lens auto focus camera module. The substantial improvement: It’ just made of a combination of oil and water and doesn’t need traditional mechanical parts. Under voltage the differences between electrically conducting water and non conducting oil are used (more technical details about “electrowetting”).

This technology has the potential to become a real breackthrough. It facilitates the construction of very small, power-saving and robust lenses for all types of cameras. Medium-term there seems to be a chance to produce it quite cheap. So it has a lot of real “winner attributes”, but maybe reality will teach us a different lesson.
