There is an interessting new market comming up: organic pesticides. Companies like Marrone Organic Innovations are searching for microorganisms (e.g. one cell animals) that kill weeds and pests. Currently they are experimentating with a component of a herbal Hepatitis C medizine. Another product (based on citrus oil extract) is supposed to be marketed this year.
The development of this market is quite exciting not solely because investment firms are interessted and it is surfing on the “bio wave”.
The question for me as a consumer is whether the final goods are more healthy and natural respectively or not. In turn the general question is if such products are more environment-friendly than those called “chemicals”. But the bottom line is that one simple question will answer the future of such products: “Is it profitable to use them or not?”
