The year is 2108. Here in San Francisco, water is a precious resource and the population has doubled–or even tripled. How will the city accommodate these challenges? And what’s it going to look like? That was the task eight architecture firms tackled in the History Channel’s “City of the Future” competition (CNET video).
Architects from all around the US compete in a design and engineering challenge. The preliminary round included competitions for the three largest US cities: New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Now the three winners have reached the final round and an online voting will determine the national winner.

Imho there are two interesting factors influencing the thoughts of the teams. One is the increasing importance of water (because of the ascending sea level and the threatening scarcity). The other is that cities no longer can grow in width – they have to grow in another plane in future.
