Because a friend of mine missed the “showdown post” of the format war series on cilinc.net, I was motivated to make up for my lapse:
After the recent announcements of Best Buy, Netflix and Wal-Mart to support Blu-ray the HD DVD format kissed the dust. Only some days later Toshiba drew the obvious conclusion and announced the HD DVD surrender. Finally this weekend Microsoft also withdraws from “their format”: they will no longer manufacture new HD DVD players for the Xbox.

So it’s time to say goodbye on the one hand and time to hope for further development and well-priced hardware on the other hand.
btw: currently the Samsung BD-P1400 seems to be the cheapest Blu-ray player.
